NHL - Wild - Round Up - December 17-23, 2016

Phoenix Coyotes @ Wild 1-4 - Saturday, December 17, 2016

The Minnesota Wild won their seventh straight game with a 4-1 victory against the Coyotes at Xcel Energy Center. The Wild are 11-3-0 at home, including six straight wins in which they have outscored their opponents 23-8. Wild goaltender Darcy Kuemper, starting for the sixth time this season, made 27 saves to improve to 3-2-1. It was his first start since Nov. 29. Wild defenseman Ryan Suter opened the scoring at 16:40 of the first period with a power-play goal, his first goal in 16 games. Minnesota forward Tyler Graovac gave the Wild a 2-0 lead with an unassisted goal at 11:35 of the second before Chris Stewart made it 3-0 at 3:24 of the third. Brendan Perlini ended Kuemper's shutout when he scored with 1:54 remaining before Eric Staal added an empty-net goal with 37 seconds left to make it 4-1. Coyotes defenseman Connor Murphy returned the lineup after missing three games with an upper-body injury and assisted on Perlini's goal.
* Stewart took the puck off the boards and skated in alone with a nice wrist for his goal in the third period.
"You're up two going into the third period, you definitely want to push for the third one and kind of took their hope," Stewart said. "If they get one there, then it's 2-1, it's a whole different ballgame. It's cliché, but we put the nail in the coffin."
* Graovac blocked a shot by Coyotes defenseman Jakob Chychrun to start a breakout and scored his third goal of the season by slipping the puck between Smith's pads.
* Wild forward Erik Haula left the game at 5:02 of the first period with a lower-body injury and did not return. Boudreau said he will know more on his status on Monday. ... Wil forward Zac Dalpe has been cleared to play. He has missed 21 games with a knee injury. ... Doan remained one goal from 400 in his career. … Parise has a four-game point streak (one goal, three assists).
"It's never fun sitting back and watching, but it's a little bit easier when the team's been playing like they have been. It was just nice to get out there and feel like I was contributing to a good thing we've got going and it was a fun game in front of the home crowd and it was a big win." Kuemper said.
"It felt really good. I had a blast. It's fun to be a part of this team when we're winning like this…We have momentum and we're going to keep trying to keep this tide going."
"I think Bruce was rolling with three centermen and saying, 'Grao you're up. Grao you're up.' I've never heard him say my name so many times." Graovac said.
Colorado Avalanche @ Wild 0-2 - Tuesday, December 20, 2016

Devan Dubnyk made 18 saves for his NHL-leading fifth shutout of the season, and the Minnesota Wild won their eighth straight, a 2-0 victory against the Colorado Avalanche at Xcel Energy Center. Dubnyk is 7-0-0 with nine goals allowed in his past seven starts for Minnesota (19-8-4). The Wild winning streak is the second longest in their history (nine games, March 8-24, 2007). Minnesota is 12-3-0 at home, including seven straight wins outscoring opponents 25-8. The Wild are in second place in the Central Division with 42 points, three ahead of the St. Louis Blues and six behind the Chicago Blackhawks. Coyle scored a power-play goal at 14:14 of the first period to give Minnesota a 1-0 lead. He extended his point streak to four games, and it was the third straight game the Wild scored a power-play goal. Mikko Koivu made it 2-0 at 8:21 of the second period. Semyon Varlamov, who returned after missing three games with a groin injury, made 31 saves for Colorado (11-19-1), which has lost four straight and is 2-9-1 in its past 12 games.

* Coyle picked up the rebound off Matt Dumba's shot for his Wild-leading 11th goal.
* Koivu rushed toward the net and received a pass in the slot from Dumba to score his sixth goal in his past 13 games. He had two in the first 18.
* Wild forward Pat Cannone, 30, played 9:11 in his NHL debut. He had two shots and five faceoff wins. … Avalanche forward Joe Colborne played 10:33 after missing three games with a lower-body injury.
"That was an impressive game by us all the way around. You look at the end of the game and that's about the tale of the game: We just keep the puck in their end the last minute and a half or two minutes. That was a real good effort start to finish for us." Dubnyk said.
"We want to keep this streak going here. It's been our best hockey and we want to push these guys (Colorado) back down. We want to keep them there and kind of distance ourselves back up in the standings. We need these points right now. They're going to be crucial down the road, so it's a really big two for us." Charlie Coyle said.
"I brought it to their attention. As for the source of pride, that's upon them. I can't read their minds. I think they took it to heart. I think it was one of those games where the score was a little, what's the word I'm looking for, it could've been worse." Bruce Boudreau
Wild @ Montreal Canadiens 4-2 - Thursday, December 22, 2016

Eric Staal scored a shorthanded goal at 3:08 of the third period and the Minnesota Wild won their ninth straight game with a 4-2 victory against the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre. Devan Dubnyk made 32 saves, and Jordan Schroeder, Jared Spurgeon and Jason Zucker scored for Minnesota (20-8-4), which also won nine straight games from March 8-24, 2007. The Wild have an opportunity to break that record against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Friday. Max Pacioretty and Artturi Lehkonen scored and Carey Price made 23 saves for Montreal (21-8-4), which has lost two of its past three home games. The Canadiens blew leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the second period. Montreal took a 1-0 lead at 2:01 of the second while the Wild were on a power play. Pacioretty raced down the ice after Spurgeon misplayed the puck at the Canadiens blue line to score his 14th goal, the first shorthanded goal allowed by Minnesota this season. Schroeder, who was recalled from Iowa of the American Hockey League on Wednesday, scored his first goal in three games with the Wild this season at 7:09 to make it 1-1. Lehkonen gave Montreal its second lead at 2-1 with his seventh goal at 10:35. Spurgeon scored in his 400th game to tie it 2-2 at 15:43 of the second period, when each team scored two goals. Zucker scored an empty-net goal with 23 seconds remaining.

* Staal gave Minnesota its first lead at 3-2 when he raced down the left side and put a shot from the left faceoff dot that surprised Price. "I kind of expected him to hold onto it and take it to the hoop, but he's been in this League for a long time and he's crafty like that," Price said.
* All five Wild skaters handled the puck on the play that ended with Spurgeon's goal. Center Mikko Koivu won a faceoff and drew the puck back to defenseman Jonas Brodin, who passed it to Mikael Granlund on the left boards. Zucker received a pass from Granlund on the left edge of the slot and passed to Spurgeon, who scored from the right faceoff dot.

"I've been a part of some good runs before, never 10 in a row, so this is fun. You want to keep this riding as long as you can, and it's a lot of fun winning. We're going into the break feeling real good and it's going to be a great effort to put everything on the line [Friday] and then exhale for a couple of days." Staal said.
"We hung in there pretty well. I thought it was a really good game. Unfortunately for them, they were using four defensemen almost for the whole game and I think they got a little tired at the end. But I thought we never quit and we always believed, and when you believe, good things happen." Bruce Boudreau said
"I think this one is different by the way that a lot of the games happened on the road as well, so that's never easy to do in this league, to get road wins in a row. So for sure, it's a great feeling and you want to keep doing it." Mikko Koivu
"He's a good goalie. His journey's been a rough one at times, but you've got to respect his resilience and the way he's carried himself throughout the whole process. You've got to tip your hat to a guy like that, sticking with it and finding a way to be successful." Devan Dubnyk

Wild @ NY Rangers 7-4 - Friday, December 23, 2016

The Minnesota Wild won their 10th consecutive game, the longest streak in their history, 7-4 against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. Mikael Granlund, Mikko Koivu, Nino Niederreiter, Marco Scandella, Jason Zucker, Matt Dumba and Charlie Coyle scored for the Wild (21-8-4), who have outscored the opposition 37-16 during the streak. Goaltender Darcy Kuemper made 31 saves.
Coyle had three assists, and Koivu, Zucker and Eric Staal each had two.
Chris Kreider scored twice, and Ryan McDonagh and Derek Stepan each had a goal for the Rangers (23-12-1), who have lost two straight, allowing seven goals in each game. New York goalie Henrik Lundqvist allowed four goals on 13 shots before being pulled 4:55 into the second period. Antti Raanta made five saves.
* Scandella scored his first of the season off a slap shot from the left faceoff circle.
"Once we started winning, they started to believe in the things we were trying to accomplish, and the times we didn't do well, [goalie Devan Dubnyk] was there to bail us out. When you gain confidence, and if you believe you can win all the time, then it usually happens. It'll never happen if you don't believe you can win." Bruce Boudreau
"I think more important than the winning streak is the way we're playing right now. For sure, it's great to have the record, but as players we're looking more at the way we play, and being able to play in tough buildings and beat some good hockey teams is a great feeling." Koivu said.
"No one is thinking about the record. We just play with hopes of coming ready to play, and everyone's doing their part right now." Coyle said.

NHL - Wild - Round Up - December 07-15, 2016

Wild @ Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 - Wednesday, December 07, 2016
Devan Dubnyk made 35 saves for the Minnesota Wild in a 3-2 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Air Canada Centre. Dubnyk made 17 saves in the third period to preserve the win in his 300th NHL start. Eric Staal's first goal since Nov. 10, a span of 13 games, gave Minnesota a 3-1 lead 1:15 into the second period. He received a pass from Charlie Coyle and put a shot past Maple Leafs goalie Frederik Andersen for his sixth of the season and 799th NHL point. The Wild (13-8-4) finished 2-1-2 on a five-game road trip. The Maple Leafs (10-10-5) have lost three straight. Jason Zucker gave the Wild a 1-0 lead 8:42 into the first period. Wild captain Mikko Koivu forced a turnover by Maple Leafs center Nazem Kadri behind the net and passed to Mikael Granlund. He tapped the puck to Zucker, who shot past Andersen for his fourth goal. Chris Stewart gave the Wild a 2-0 lead with 5:38 left in the first period when he received a pass from Jared Spurgeon and scored on a breakaway against Andersen for his fourth goal. Maple Leafs forward Ben Smith made it 2-1 at 16:50 when he put a rebound of a Kadri shot past Dubnyk for his second goal. Maple Leafs center Tyler Bozak made it 3-2 with 9:06 left in the second period when he skated around Wild defenseman Matt Dumba and put a backhand over Dubnyk's glove.

* Bozak's sixth of the season was unassisted as he got by Dumba and beat Dubnyk.
* Dubnyk's save against Connor Brown with 1:06 left in the third period helped preserve the win.

"If [Devan] was in Toronto, there'd be no Carey Price, I'm just saying media-wise. I mean, he hasn't allowed more than three goals in any game he's played this year, he's held us in all the time, and they had 17-3 or something shots in the third period and they didn't get any (goals)."
"I told the guys, 'It may not look it, but my insides are really happy right now.' We held on, I mean, we didn't do anything in the third period, but at the end of an 11-day trip to win in a tough building to win in, it was pretty good." Bruce Boudreau
"That was a good forecheck. Our line, when we're successful, we're spending time in the other team's end using the back of the net, using our bodies and strength, and Charlie did a great job on the forecheck and I was the beneficiary of taking it out to the front."
"It's been a long grind. This is a long trip, we gutted it out; I like that we did. We've got a veteran team and we've got guys that understand what it takes certain nights, and tonight was a certain night where we had to gut it out, and kudos to a lot of guys that stepped up into big spots to make big plays defensively. That's a big win; we go home now feeling good and hopefully start a good stretch at home." Staal said.

Jason Pominville, Chris Stewart and Eric Staal scored in the shootout for the Minnesota Wild in a 3-2 win against the Edmonton Oilers at the Xcel Energy Center. Devan Dubnyk stopped four Oilers in the shootout and made 25 saves, improving his career record against Edmonton to 8-1-0. Leon Draisaitl and Jordan Eberle scored for the Oilers in the shootout, which went six rounds.
Defenseman Matt Dumba and forward Jason Zucker scored in regulation for Minnesota (14-8-4). Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored for Edmonton (14-11-5) and Cam Talbot made 34 saves. Draisaitl gave the Oilers a 1-0 lead at 19:04 of first period, shooting a rebound past Dubnyk. Draisaitl played the puck to Benoit Pouliot in the Wild zone, then took a return pass in front of the net. His first shot was stopped by Dubnyk, but Draisaitl converted the rebound.
Dumba scored at 4:26 of the second period, shooting the puck past Talbot from the blue line. Talbot was screened by Pominville standing in front of the net.
Zucker scored to put Minnesota up 2-1 at 1:19 of the third period after Oilers forward Connor McDavid attempted a drop pass to defenseman Oscar Klefbom deep in the Oilers zone. Nugent-Hopkins tied the game 2-2 at 15:21 on the power play with a shot from the point that sailed past Dubnyk. The Wild used a coach's challenge on possible goaltender interference on forward Patrick Maroon, but the goal stood. Minnesota was awarded a power play at 1:09 of overtime after McDavid was assessed a high-sticking penalty but could not convert. Charlie Coyle came close for the Wild, hitting the post on the power play.

* Draisaitl and Pouliot exchanged passes in the Wild zone, which lead to Edmonton's first goal.
* Staal made an excellent move to score the winning goal in the shootout, avoiding a poke check from Talbot and casually sliding the puck into the net.
* McDavid was held without a point for the second time this week by the Wild. He did not have a point in a 2-1 overtime loss against Minnesota in Edmonton on Sunday. … Draisaitl extended his point streak to three games. He has six goals and three assists in his past six games.
"It was pretty tight a lot of the way, they had a good first, I thought our second was better. In the third we made a good push again. Talbot made some good saves in overtime and [Dubnyk] too. To be able to get the two points is big and you feel better about it coming to the rink [Saturday]."
"Wins are wins in this league, every game is close, it's tight and it seems it's 2-1, 3-2 [all the time]. If we can feel comfortable in those matches it's only going to help us more moving forward throughout the season." Staal said.
"I thought today we played above them most of the night. When you're starting to chase [Connor] McDavid and Draisaitl and Nugent-Hopkins, they're faster guys, then you get in trouble. If you can play above them, you're able to contain them a little bit." Bruce Boudreau said.

Florida Panthers @ Wild 1-5 - Tuesday, December 13, 2016

Five forwards scored, and the Minnesota Wild won their fifth straight game, 5-1 against the Florida Panthers at Xcel Energy Center. Wild goaltender Devan Dubnyk made 29 saves. He is 5-0-0 with seven goals allowed in his past five games. Minnesota (16-8-4) is 10-3-0 at home. Dylan McIlrath scored, and Roberto Luongo made 12 saves on 17 shots before he was pulled in the third period. The goal was McIlrath's first with the Panthers. Jason Zucker scored on a breakaway at 8:26 of the third period for a 5-0 lead. Mikko Koivu made it 4-0 at 6:04. Erik Haula scored on a rebound at 4:11 of the second period for a 2-0 lead, and Eric Staal made it 3-0 at 9:46. Zach Parise scored his first goal since Nov. 25 to make it 1-0 at 11:19 of the first period. A goal by Florida forward Kyle Rau at 8:39 of the second period was overturned after a coach's challenge. The review determined the play was offside. James Reimer replaced Luongo at 8:26 of the third period and made five saves. McIlrath scored at 15:36. Panthers forward Jaromir Jagr did not have a point and remains four behind Mark Messier for second in NHL history (1,187-1,183). Wayne Gretzky is first with 2,857.

* Jason Pominville passed to Staal on a breakaway. Luongo stopped the first shot but Staal scored on the rebound.
* Zucker received a pass from Matt Dumba to lead the breakaway. Switching to his backhand he sent it top-shelf for the five-goal lead.
* Panthers forward Jonathan Marchessault had an assist in his return after missing five games with a lower-body injury. … Wild forward Nino Niederreiter assisted on Haula's goal and has 10 points in 11 games. … Wild forward Mikael Granlund assisted on Koivu's goal and has a season-high four-game point streak.
"It's a long season, so you need some nights some other guys stepping up and the next night some other guys. If you look around the League, all the good teams, they have that depth. Now that we're healthy, you can really see that. All lines were going." Mikko Koivu
"I loved the fact that we can spread it out and get five goals amongst three lines. You'd like it to be four lines. You can't have everything." Bruce Boudreau said.
"We need to keep climbing. It's exciting to be in this spot with games at hand as well, and again, those games don't matter unless we win them, but it's still a good situation to be in. Dubnyk said.
"Winning is fun, so you just gotta keep doing it. I tried to shoot the puck a little more and get to the net a little more lately. I've had better chances. They haven't gone in. Fortunately, that one went in for me." Parise said.

Wild @ Nashville Predators 5-2 - Thursday, December 15, 2016
Eric Staal scored two goals in a 5-2 win for the Minnesota Wild against the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena. The Wild (17-8-4) extended their winning streak to six and goaltender Devan Dubnyk improved to 8-0-2 in his past 10 games. He finished with 34 saves. The Predators (13-12-4) dropped to 10-3-2 at home. Jonas Brodin gave the Wild a 1-0 lead at 10:20 of the first period on the power play on a wrist shot from the slot. He got the shot through traffic past Predators goaltender Pekka Rinne for his third goal. Predators defenseman Ryan Ellis tied the game at 1-1 at 12:04 on a shot from above the right faceoff circle. Forward Colin Wilson made the pass to Ellis, who beat Dubnyk for his fourth goal.
* Coyle's goal came as a result of him driving to the net and getting to a rebound before Rinne could react.
* Dubnyk has given up two goals or fewer in 19 of 24 starts this season, including in each of his past seven games. … Fisher has three goals in his past two games and has scored six of his eight goals this season at home.
"We just want to continue to build our game," Dubnyk said. "It's not just one game because we play again in a day and a half so we're just trying to build on what things we're doing well and continue to roll."
"[Rinne] is a stud back there," Wild defenseman Ryan Suter said. "He's a very good goaltender so just put a lot of traffic, a lot of pucks at him. We were able to get some early, which really helped us."
"We're just trying to keep this going," Staal said. "You never want to give anyone anything back. We had a good first period and really set the tone, and I think from there maybe not as sharp, but you've got to find ways to win. It wasn't the prettiest tonight, but we've got a solid team and a great goalie right now."
"They're not all Picasso's, right? The two points was very important, and to come out of there with that win, it probably frustrated them a little bit. We weren't at our best, but our goalie was." - Wild coach Bruce Boudreau

NHL - Hawks - Round Up - December 13-23, 2016

Hawks @ NY Rangers 2-1 - Tuesday, December 13, 2016

Scott Darling made 33 saves to help the Chicago Blackhawks defeat Antti Raanta and the New York Rangers 2-1 at Madison Square Garden. "Absolutely amazing," Blackhawks forward Artem Anisimov said of Darling.
Darling, making his sixth straight start since Corey Crawford had to go on injured reserve following an appendectomy he had Dec. 3, outdueled Raanta, who had his shutout streak end at 176:22 when Trevor van Riemsdyk scored at 5:18 of the second period. Raanta, who started in place of a healthy Henrik Lundqvist for the fourth consecutive game, made 24 saves but couldn't prevent his three-game winning streak from ending. The Blackhawks (19-8-4) are 3-0-1 in their past four games, with Darling allowing three goals on 117 shots for a .974 save percentage. He and Chicago lost to Raanta and New York 1-0 in overtime on Friday. Raanta allowed one goal on 63 shots in the previous three games. New York (20-10-1) scored at 8:15 of the second period when Jesper Fast ended his 17-game drought. The Blackhawks took a 2-1 lead on Anisimov's goal with 1:09 remaining in the second period. It came after a diving stick save by Darling on Mats Zuccarello 34 seconds earlier. Darling made 15 saves in the second period and 11 in the third. He stopped Marek Hrivik on a rebound and Jimmy Vesey at the left post with his left pad with 2:07 left. Van Riemsdyk ended Raanta's shutout streak by scoring on a far-side shot from the right hash marks off a pass from Artemi Panarin. Fast tied it when he batted the puck into the net from in front of the left post. Darling made 18 saves after the goal.
* With 1:20 remaining in the third period, Rangers forward J.T. Miller went hard into Darling, knocking him down and his stick out of his hands. Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa was there to knock the puck away from the goal line and then blocked defenseman Dan Girardi's shot, leading to a clear for Chicago.
* Vesey was all over the ice and creating chances. He had seven shots on goal, many from the slot, in 14:46 of ice time.
* Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh was scratched because of the flu. The defenseman skated in warmups but left the ice early. Adam Clendening took his spot in the lineup. … The Rangers played the first 16:13 of the second period without Brady Skjei, who was cut by a skate blade late in the first and had to get medical attention. … Chicago is 13-0-0 when leading after two periods.
"Coming out of the second period, we didn't deserve to be up 2-1, so it was a good thing. I thought we were OK in the third period, but Darling was the reason we kept them off the scoreboard." Joel Quenneville
"You can only worry about the next shot, but it's nice when you make a big save like at the end of the second and the guys go down and score a goal. It's nice to contribute to stuff like that." Darling said.
"He's been unbelievable. A couple highlight-reel saves there that just leave you saying, 'Wow.' He's been awesome. He's so steady. He's making all the saves. He's doing a great job handling pucks. He's been great, and we have a ton of confidence in him too." van Riemsdyk said.

Hawks @ NY Islanders 5-4 - Thursday, December 15, 2016
Richard Panik broke a tie with 6:13 remaining to help the Chicago Blackhawks to a 5-4 win against the New York Islanders at Barclays Center. Artemi Panarin had two power-play goals and an assist, and Artem Anisimov and Marian Hossa each scored for the Blackhawks (20-8-4), who went 3-for-3 with the man-advantage and are 4-0-1 in their past five games. Scott Darling made 28 saves.
Andrew Ladd, Casey Cizikas, Ryan Strome and Anders Lee scored for the Islanders (11-13-5), who have lost three straight in regulation. Thomas Greiss made 27 saves. In a six-goal first period, Ladd scored at 2:14 when he took a pass from Alan Quine and put a wrist shot past Darling for a 1-0 New York lead. Cizikas scored 1:34 later when he finished off a 2-on-1 with Nikolay Kulemin to make it 2-0. Panarin scored his first goal at 9:47 when he one-timed Brent Seabrook's feed past Greiss to cut the Islanders lead to 2-1. The Blackhawks tied it 2-2 when Anisimov extended his goal streak to three games on the power play at 13:03.
* Panik scored his eighth goal when he took a nifty pass from the corner by Rasmussen and beat Greiss with a wrist shot from the slot. It was Panik's second game-winning goal of the season. "It was a really good pass," Panik said. "I was kind of surprised I got it like in the right spot. I just try to shoot it. I'm glad it went in."

"It's a great sign. You've got great leadership. We don't change the way we play, the consistency of doing the right things. We've been fortunate in a lot of games this year with scoring some big goals. We've had tremendous goaltending this year, we've been good in overtime. But the guys play the right way and the top guys lead the charge, whether it's [Marian] Hossa's five or six big goals for us that led to five, seven, eight points. Basically, that fourth goal was a huge goal for us tonight, (it) put us in the right spot going into the third. Every game has been different, but the timing of some key goals this year has been unbelievable, along with the key saves." Joel Quenneville
"(I) like (our game), especially after the first period. Our line, we didn't have it a lot on our stick. They scored two goals on us. But it feels good. We step up and find a way to get one for our team." said Panik, who converted a pass from Dennis Rasmussen.
Ottawa Senators @ Hawks 4-3 - Tuesday, December 20, 2016
The Ottawa Senators defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-3 at United Center on Tuesday for their first win here since March 28, 2001. The Senators (19-11-3) scored three goals in the second period, including the game-winner by Dion Phaneuf on a power play at 14:22, and held off the Blackhawks (22-9-4), who pulled within 4-3 on a goal by Richard Panik at 1:42 of the third. Chicago had opportunities to tie it on a penalty shot by Marcus Kruger with 4:52 left, a scramble in front of the net with 35 seconds remaining, and a shot by Patrick Kane with 6.5 seconds left, but Ottawa goalie Mike Condon (23 saves) made big stops on all three chances. Bobby Ryan, Derick Brassard and Tom Pyatt also scored for the Senators, who won their third straight game. Ottawa center Kyle Turris and Kane each had two assists. After being outshot 15-9 in the first period and 11-6 in the second, the Blackhawks outshot the Senators 11-4 in the third. Artemi Panarin and Tyler Motte also scored for Chicago, which got 26 saves from Scott Darling in his 10th consecutive start. Panarin extended his point streak to six games. The Senators scored three of the four goals in the second period, including Brassard at 7:31 and Pyatt at 7:41, to take a 4-2 lead.
* Panarin scored his 15th goal with a perfectly placed one-timer from the left wing. Brent Seabrook passed to Panarin, who shot it into the net just under the crossbar on the short side. Officials needed to repair the net afterward.
* Hossa is questionable to play against the Colorado Avalanche on Friday. … Blackhawks center Artem Anisimov missed his second game with an upper-body injury and is day to day. … Chicago goalie Corey Crawford (appendectomy) missed his 10th straight game but was activated off injured reserve afterward and hopes to return against the Avalanche on Friday. … Senators goalie Andrew Hammond missed the game with an ankle injury and is day to day. … Goalie Matt O'Connor was recalled from Binghamton of the American Hockey League to back up Condon.
"I guess that's going to happen, what can you do? It's frustrating when pucks don't go in, especially when it can be the difference-maker in the game. You give yourself a chance to tie things up late in the game. Obviously, we don't want to get behind, but we did." Jonathan Toews said.
"A penalty shot is a great chance to score. I don't know the odds there, but it's a great chance to score a goal. Obviously, I would have liked to have scored on that one. It didn't happen this time. There's not much to do about it right now." Marcus Kruger
Colorado Avalanche @ Hawks 2-1 OT - Friday, December 23, 2016
Coming off five straight losses, the Colorado Avalanche gave themselves something positive to think about during the Christmas break. Nathan MacKinnon scored 25 seconds into overtime and Calvin Pickard made 38 saves to help the Avalanche defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 2-1 at United Center on Friday. Colorado entered with a 2-11-1 record in 14 games since they started the season 9-9-0. The Avalanche have 25 points, fewest in the NHL. The Blackhawks have 49 points, second to the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Avalanche lost goalie Semyon Varlamov to a groin injury following a 6-0 loss against the Toronto Maple Leafs at Pepsi Center on Thursday. Pickard stepped in and defeated the Blackhawks for the first time in five career appearances (1-4-0). Corey Crawford nearly matched him with 32 saves for the Blackhawks in his first start following a 10-game absence while recovering from an appendectomy Dec. 3. Jonathan Toews ended a 13-game goalless drought by scoring his fifth goal for the Blackhawks (22-9-5). Mikko Rantanen scored for the Avalanche (12-20-1). The Blackhawks took a 1-0 lead on Toews' power-play goal at 11:52 of the second period, his first since Nov. 6. Toews tapped the puck in off a sharp-angled shot by Artemi Panarin from the left side of the net.
Colorado had a couple of good chances to tie it late in the second but Crawford stopped both, including a diving, stick save against Rantanen at 16:16.
Rantanen scored at 5:42 of the third. Standing in front of Crawford, he tied it 1-1 off assists by Tyson Barrie and MacKinnon.

* MacKinnon's goal was the first overtime winner of his NHL career and first goal since Dec. 11. It came on a 2-on-1 rush following a Blackhawks turnover. "I took a peak [at the pass], but I definitely was leaning toward shooting," MacKinnon said. "I'm comfortable coming down that right side, going short side, so I was definitely thinking shot."
* Blackhawks rookie Vinnie Hinostroza missed the morning skate with flu-like symptoms but played 15:12. He centered the second line for injured center Artem Anisimov (upper body) and finished with four shots, two hits and won 5-of-10 faceoffs.
* Pickard made two big saves late in the first to keep the game scoreless, using his blocker for both. Duncan Keith was denied off a one-timer with 1:32 left and Toews had a one-timer from the right faceoff circle stopped 27 seconds later.
* Anisimov missed his second straight game and right wing Marian Hossa (upper body) missed his first since leaving in the first period against the Ottawa Senators on Tuesday. … Varlamov stayed in Denver and has no timetable for his return. … Spencer Martin was recalled from San Antonio of the American Hockey League on Friday and backed up Pickard.

"I was just trying to feel good right from the start. I was reading plays pretty good. That's the most important thing, seeing the puck well. I felt pretty good." said Crawford, who made 13 saves in a scoreless first period.
"We know we had a dangerous team, knowing they got beat bad at home [Thursday] night, and they bounced back. Now we have a couple of days off to get refreshed and a fun week going into the [2017 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic]." Joel Quenneville
