KHL - Round Up - August 30, 2017

Dietz, Dawes, Dallman – a grand D-esign for Barys
Barys Astana 4 Torpedo Nizhny Novgorod 2 (1-0, 1-1, 2-1)
Darren Dietz scored a fine goal as Barys defeated Torpedo to move to a 3-1 record at the start of the season. The defenseman got his third – and best so far – for his new club late in the second period, making it 2-1. There wasn’t much space for him to work with when he received Nigel Dawes’ pass, but an audacious dangle cut Alexei Potapov out of the play and Dietz wriggled through the gap before shooting past Stanislav Galimov. That goal reinstated the lead that Talgat Zhailauov gave Barys in the ninth minute. Denis Barantsev tied the game for Torpedo early in the second period, and the visitor drew level again late in the third through Mikhail Grigoryev. But Dawes made it 3-2 with his third goal of the season and Kevin Dallman added an empty-netter to seal the win for the host.

Slovan snaps losing streak
Slovan Bratislava 4 Dinamo Minsk 2 (1-1, 0-1, 3-0)
Dinamo took the lead in the 14th minute when Alexander Materukhin led a break from his own zone and found Alexander Pavlovich for the opening goal. But Slovan tied the game in the final second of the first period when Radek Smolenak’s chip-and-chase sent Colby Genoway clean through for a short-handed goal. For Dinamo, a team that has suffered some misfortune in its opening games, it was another blow that threatened to dampen confidence.
But the Belarusians rolled with that punch, and came out after the intermission to take the lead once again. This time, the Dinamo PP did its job. Materukhin’s shot caused chaos in the slot, Yegor Sharangovich banged his effort into the heel of Slovan defenseman and, as the puck looped into the air, Evgeny Kovyrshin did well to keep his stick down while swatting the disk into the net.
It wasn’t enough, though. Slovan rallied in the third, scoring twice to claim its first victory of the season. Andrej Meszaros tied the game in the 47th minute with a powerful shot from the point, then the defenseman had an assist on Michal Repik’s game-winner six minutes from the end. Radek Smolenak’s empty net goal put the outcome beyond doubt with 90 seconds left to play.
